There are many people doing wonderful things in Cambodia, unfortunately often the easiest part of helping is providing the physical assistance, but this is only a small piece of the puzzle. With the introduction of any support education is critical, and it’s a long and ongoing process. Follow up is vital to ensure that projected benefits are realized into the future, and most importantly community buy-in is essential.
All of this takes time and a willingness to understand the cultural differences and ways things work in Cambodia. We are in a wonderful position where we are able to be regularly involved in an ongoing basis with the villages we work with and together learn with the community.
Our projects are developed in conjunction with the families within The Villages and together they are implemented and maintained.
Current Programs
Turn Landfill into a Classroom - Sep 2011
We are embarking on an exciting project to build a classroom with a difference in Kompheim village. Instead of using bricks we will be following Pura Vida's example and using Eco Blocks - Plastic drink bottles stuffed with clean landfill waste!

Supporting Education
Access to education is the right of every child and yet in Cambodia there are many challenges that make it difficult for children to attend and complete even primary school.
Siem Reap province is one of the top 3 poorest provinces in Cambodia.
Vertical Gardens
Vertical gardens are great! From giving over 48 meters of garden in a 4x1m strip, to their low water reqirements and flood resistant properties, a vertical garden provides poor families with the ability to grow a range of vegetables year round to support
Kompheim Village - Type 1 Family Projects
Kompheim village is home to around 30 Type 1 poor families. Each of these families are surviving day to day and for many of them finding food for their children is a struggle. Over the coming months we are working with the village in a number of areas.
Walter Filters
Access to safe drinking water is a major issue in Cambodia, as it is in many parts of the world. One of the simplest ways to overcome poverty and disease is to provide access to clean, safe drinking water.
Tree Planting
One of the sad outcomes of a 3rd World country struggling to develop is the destruction to flora and fauna. In mid 2009 we commenced our Tree Planting program in Treak Village.
Barangs Without Borders
After the success of our One Day Mission on Aug 15th 2010 BWB is now taking place regularly. This is an opportunity for expats in Siem Reap to get their hands dirty and help for a day in a rural village.
Water Wells
For some families access to water is limited and women and children spend significant time carting water to their homes. Aside from being back breaking work, this eats away at time better spent on education or more productive activities.
Rubbish Collection
Rubbish collection and the understanding and thinking around waste management is a long term HUSK goal. Currently in Siem Reap only a small percentage of the population have access to a regular rubbish collection, a service which families must pay for.
Rice for Rubbish Nov 2009
On the morning of Novemeber 2nd over 100 families registered for our "Rice for Rubbish" day. By 3pm over one thousand one hundred and fifty large rice bags of rubish had been collected equating to 2330 kilos of rice for village families.
Composting Toilets
One of the major issues facing families in Cambodia is the lack of basic sanitation. The majority of families have no toilet systems leading to major hygiene issues.
Community Toilets - Composting Toilets International
In 2011 Hilary from Composting Toilets International vitied Siem Reap and with the help of HUSK built 4 composting toilets for some of the poorest families in Treak Village. HUSK is very excited to have the support of Composting Toilets International.
