Turn Landfill into a Classroom

Following in the footsteps of Pura Vida, put simply we are collecting empty drink bottles, stuffing them full of rubbish and using them to build a classroom.

AND WE NEED YOUR HELP

  • We need empty plastic drink bottles of any size with their lids on!
  • We would also love old plastic bags as these are used in the build process
  • You can even give it a go and stuff some bottles at home yourself

If you are in Siem Reap bottles and bags can be dropped into The Villa Siem Reap or Beyond Unique Escapes.  If you are a bulk collector we will come and pick them up. Email us at info@huskcambodia.org to organise collection.

The Eco Block

The Eco Block Water Bottle filled With Clean Lanfill Waste

The Eco Block takes the place of bricks.  Made from old drink bottles of any size stuffed tightly with clean landfill rubbish.  These are the ideal eco alternative to bricks and greatly reduce waste going to landfill. Anything from noodle wrappers, broken up polystyrene trays, straws, bags, plastic wrappers, chip packets, etc will do

Guidelines

  • No food, green waste or wet rubbish can be put inside the eco block
  • Eco Blocks need to be stuffed tightly. A stick, piece of bamboo or long chopstick does the trick!
  • Any size plasic bottle is great, it just needs its lid

Landfill and Rubbish

Once you get outside the main tourist parts of Siem Reap rubbish collection is simply not available.  Where it is, often families cant afford to use it.  Compounding the problem is the lack of awareness or education on enviornmental issues.

Rubbish is often either left dumped around villages or in most cases burnt.  Both of these practices create further environmental issues.

How it Works

 The Eco Block Build Process

Village Participation

 We will be working with Treak and Kompheim Village in the following three areas;

1. Environmental Awareness and Education

2. Providing a non monetary Collection Reward Plan

3. Involvement for some villagers and students at Kompheim in the build and construction

Participation
We are very happy for other NGO's, schools or organisations to get involved in this project.  Please contact us at info@huskcambodia.org

Collection Reward Plan

The final details of the Collection Reward Plan are still being finalised.  Currently the market price for one brick in Siem Reap is 200 reil.

A single water bottle can be recycled for 25 riel  (4000 riel = $1US Dollar)

  • The Collection Reward Plan values each properly filled bottle at 120 reil.
  • So as a guage 33 filled bottles = $1 US
  • We have a range of Reward Items with filled bottle values
  • Examples below
X 16 One kilo of rice
X 49 Set of school materials
 x 52 1 litre of cooking oil
 x99 Mosquito Net
  x 99 Mat

 x 130

One uniform shirt and pants / skirt for a primary school student
