November 2009

At the Community School we have installed the first of two water free, composting toilets. These toilets utilize simple materials and provide families with a safe, hygienic toilet system.

The selection of this composting toilet system was based on thefollowing criteria;
1. Above ground waste management - especially important in an area subject to flooding.
2. Water Free – These systems do not require water for flushing. Important where access to water is a growing wordwide issue
3. Simple, durable construction - Local materials, low cost

July 2010

We are very proud to advise we have an additional four toilet systems built within Treak Village. The design of the systems has been modified from the original design removing considerable ongoing maintenance requirements. The system design has been taken from systems built in Vanuatu and modified slightly for Cambodian conditions. The new systems are more expensive than our original design, but are far superior and easier for villagers to use.

Toilets are installed for selected families within Treak Village. Prior to installation initial briefing and training sessions are conducted. Upon installation we provide further training and ongoing follow up checks.

Our last routine check was undertaken on July 16th. Each of four families remained very happy with their toilet systems and all are being used. We are very happy to report that there was no smell from any toilet system, and we were very impressed with the cleanliness of the toilets.

Radford University Building Project May 2010
A very special thank you to the team from Radford University and especially Bill Kennan for funding and constructing these toilets in Treak Village. Students from the university did an amazing job constructing these toilets. From digging, to bricklaying and thatching new skills were put to the test. The team rose to the challenge and did a sensational job.
