Despite being the 'Tourist Town' of Cambodia Siem Reap province is actually one of the poorest provinces in Cambodia. Step just a few meters away from the toursit exterior and Siem Reap is a town of extreme proverty.

Among some of the basic issues facing families in Siem Reap everyday;

- Lack of access to safe water
- Poor Healthcare
- Poor Nutrition
- Lack of basic education
- Road Safety / Traffic Accidents especially for children
- Lack of regular employment

Tourism brings many benefits to Cambodia and its people. There are also however negative imapacts and some of these are very easily avoided. Please ensure when you visit Cambodia you understand a little about being a responsible visitor. Simple actions can make a big difference.

Being a Responsible Tourist

  • Please do not hand out money or make purchases for beggars (eg baby formula) this just extends the begging cycle and purchases will only be sold back.
  • Be aware of which organisations you are supporting - do some research, ask questions
  • Remeber children need time to rest, study and play - be vary about organisations promoting childrens dancing late at night, or for long hours
  • Please don't hand out gifts, lollies, books or toys this sends the wrong messages, can lead to the begging cycle and cause jealousy within villages

  • Be very wary of any organisation that lets visitors simply walk in and play with children unsupervised and unregistered
  • Ensure the places you visit with children have a child protection policy
